The black-white divide in Obama’s popularity

  • If I ignore the fact that black people really like Obama, I can make a case that he hasn’t been a very popular president so far. And hey, if I just kick it old skewl and restrict Obama’s popularity ratings to those of white male property owners, then I can make the case that… what, why are you all looking at me like that?

‘Shorter’ concept created by Daniel Davies and perfected by Elton Beard. We are aware of all Internet traditions.™

The real measure of Barack Obama’s success or failure is to be found by surveying the conservative white men of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas, because they represent the true spirit of remaining loyal to one’s country. That the country to which they’re loyal isn’t the USA is immaterial. It’s the unquestioning loyalty what counts.

On his 100th day in office, Barack Obama enjoys high job approval ratings, no matter what poll you consult. But if a new survey by the New York Times is accurate, the president and some of his policies are significantly less popular with white Americans than with black Americans, and his sky-high ratings among African-Americans make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.

“….because, as we all know, blacks are only 3/5s of a real person.”

There was a big stink on the local fishwrapper’s online comments because there was a Confederate Memorial Day celebration last week where an original copy of the Confederate Constitution was on display, and no one actually came to the event. Also, at one of the statues Downtown that’s connected to some Civil War something or other, there’s like maybe a dozen Confederate and Bonnie Blue flags and six or seven bouquets, and it’s a big statue, too, so it looks kinda pathetic. Same people who’re pissed about the lack of attendance are pissed that the rest of us in the Classic City aren’t properly honoring the Confederate dead, and we’re all like “Dude, that was 140-something years ago, we have a drought and no friggin’ jobs to deal with now, plus it’s finals and some asshole shot some amatuer actors for some reason no one can figure out, so piss off okay?”

The monolith of the black voter must be corralled and controlled at any cost.

I said it a number of times during the election and I’ll say it again unashamedly: a surprising number of my fellow Honky Americans have never, ever interacted with a person of the African-American persuasion with any sort of real depth and they’ve never made a real, personal connection with one single, solitary black person. They might know someone in passing, but that’s about it.

As a Suthrener who hears this shit every day, let me try to interpret.

The monolith of the black voter must be corralled and controlled at any cost.

Blacks comprise a racially-identifiable group, which means their capacity to overpower everything with their blackness must be controlled before they start running EVERYTHING!, and blacks are obviously the racists because they’re black, and scary.

Racism is over except in the imaginations of the Media and the Politicians (but I repeat myself).

Now that we have a black president, who isn’t really black anyway he’s “mixed,” racism no longer exists, except on the part of Lie-brul politicians and their lie-head minions, the Lie-brul media, who just want to keep pretending there’s racism so their BLACK PRESIDENT will keep spending money on special programs that will benefit lazy blacks and bankrupt the white man who is the only one who works for a living in this socialist country.

The rest of us could care less about the color of someone’s skin.

Because all those monolithic blacks hate whites, God only knows why, that means they’re the real racists, not us Suthren whites who know by now to not be racist out loud, which we aren’t anyway. Racist, that is.

See? Completely logical and most of all not at all racist.

White guys down here seem to actually believe it, in spite of the fact that if you go into any damn goods/services distributor around here which could be categorized as “low-wage”, inevitably there’s a cracker in the front office and the car repair/loading dock/cleaning crew – ie. the people who do the actual freaking labor – are all inevitably black, with a couple white folks thrown in as a token.

The ending sentence is just too precious.

A continued high rating among black Americans will be a valuable pillar of support for the president, should he one day find himself in political trouble.

He had no purpose in listing all the poll results except to try to show that black Americans are racist. So how to summarize? He goes with the lame “I’m just trying to be helpful here and remind Obama that he’s got a deep well of support among black Americans in case he might forget. Heaven forbid he should one day find himself in political trouble. Or that crazy white people should be forced to commit violent acts by the black blackity black agenda of Obama.”

I’ve read better endings in essays by fourth-graders about a class trip. “We’re very lucky that the hard workers at the George W. Bush Wastewater Treatment Plant can stand the smell so we can have clean, safe water.”

They think more blacks are poor, more blacks are in prison, blah blah blah is just how things are in their “equal” world. The thought of treating a black person as just a regular old human being *is* special rights, as far as they are concerned.

Yep. The Carolina (High English) influence shows on the east side, while Memphis has more of the flat Delta tones. It sounds that way all the way to Little Rock (here) then starts getting more “hillbilly” as you head west to my native Ozarks. My neutral (un-affected) voice is only-slightly-flattened hillbilly.

    You’re right, I misconstrued.

I think of “hate” as being active, and there is surely that, but hate requires fear, and I think a lot of (especially older) Southern folk aren’t afraid of black people as much as they really believe they are less-than-human. It’s more a passive astonishment that people would actually *want* to treat them as equals.

If anything, hate would be a step up for these folks. With hate they would have to admit to themselves they were racist. For the congenitally bigoted, they really don’t think they are racist.

I think York could have some sort of twisted point that black people blindly support a black leader regardless of his policy (not dissimilar to the way we often marginalize the 22% Bush supporters as blind followers and bigots) except for the fact that, as he mentions in his piece, blacks also have sky-high approval of Biden, who’s not very black last time I checked.

Regardless, now that our guy’s in charge and seems to be handling things rationally, I’ve relaxed a bit about the wing-nut pundits and simply see their role as that of cheerleaders rather than analysists; Bill Kristol seeks the silver lining in republican failures (“Specter switching is good for the GOP!”) and York takes the “reverse-racism” wedding dress out of the closet every once in a while and wonders what could have been if he didn’t get jilted.

“Poor little thing, bless his heart, he ain’t got the sense God gave a grasshopper’s be-hind”

    ACT 1, SCENE 1
(Pull back from a dusty trail to reveal a team of horses pulling a covered wagon. Two men sit on the buckboard, DAVE and FRANK, dressed in buckskins and cowboy hats. Behind them is HAL, a vintage Babbage-type Analytical Engine. Behind HAL are three men in open coffins. As we pan across the three we can see they are asleep rather than dead.)

    FRANK
How long you reckon till we reach Jupiter City?

No, of course not!) Black people have voted for white people for ever (I mean, once they were freed from slavery, once they got they right to vote, and could pay the poll tax, and avoided getting lynched on their way to the polls, and like that) sometimes in huge numbers, occasionally even choosing white candidates over black ones.
