Doh! I just went back and re-read the original msnbc article referenced above, and they later issued a correction. It was apparently al-Jaafari who was calling for the fast pullout, not Rumsfeld as was originally claimed.

Let's not forget, it's only when Democrats call for fast troop withdrawal that it's helping the enemies. Back in July, it was the decisive thing for Rumsfeld to call for. At that point, timetables were still bad, though, just to be clear.

Not only do they propose an a bill that simply states “immediate withdrawl”, as if that was what Murtha proposed, and then they call a vote on it knowing that the dems would never vote yes on something so oversimplified. Then they and the media treat it as a defeat for the dems.
They’re getting scared though. The only reason they wouldn’t put Murtha’s real proposal on the table, is that the’re afraid that it would pass. And the GOP wouldn’t be able to claim victory and pull out in their own good time.
