Really? You don’t think Harry Truman was that cynical? I do. He instantly went from a relatively conciliatory attitude to the Soviets (a policy inherited from FDR) to totally antagonistic to them, and the about-face came exactly at the moment he was told that the Death Star bomb was operational. That’s no coincidence.

It’s possible, but this version of events has (at least from Truman’s perspective) never added up for me – particularly owing to the “military base” remarks and the expressions of solemnity and near-term contrition appropriate only if that were actually the case.

It’s very easy to portray him as a devious mastermind, but he barely understood the underlying physics by the time the attack occurred and I just don’t think he had either the canniness or savagery necessary to play the part the counterculture historiography casts him for. I don’t think he was a complete dupe or innocent, either, but he was no Custis LeMay.

Those people were incinerated to scare Stalin — already universally known as paranoid madman who could be cultivated to some degree with friendly overtures but whose absolute worst decisions were made out of fear. So not only was the decision to drop the bombs evil; it was also stupid. Ok, scare is perhaps too vague. The nukes were a gruesome geopolitical form of a Dear John letter from the U.S. to the Soviets denoting that the Allied partnership was effectively severed forthwith. The mushroom clouds put the Soviets on notice.

This might be the case in the wider geopolitical context (I lean generally towards it with the caveat that a distinct rather than opportunistic anti-Soviet tendency didn’t emerge until the second half of the 40s and the earliest and the ‘loss’ of China and the first desectorization of Germany at the latest), but in the context of the Japanese war there were specific reasons to make some kind of dramatic and catastrophically abusive display of unprecedented ability or volition (a worse way to either level cities or carve Japanese infantrymen out of caves) which motivated the nuclear attacks. As for Truman himself, the single biggest push factor would probably have been a desire to prevent by however brutal means the war in the Pacific theatre from becoming ‘his’, especially after the defeat of the Axis in Europe.

It’s not going to happen. He’s going to be president until at least 2012 longer if he wins a second term and I wouldn’t like to be a GOP campaign guy trying to beat him with the collection of retreds and mouthbreathers they have now.

The fact is he’s the preisident and he’s not going to be reduced to a non-entity over any bs like his brith certificate, his grades, his height his smoking or buying the President of Germany a new vibrator no matter how much the right wing wishes it would.

If he spends time at a birthday party for a senator while a major city is abandoned to rising waters and snakes they might have something. I-pods and made up stuff about homeless – not so much.

Well, Alec, if you think a Sadly, No! thread where people take the bait and try to argue with idiots who don’t even plan on arguing in good faith is more entertaining that a Sadly, No! thread where smart people snark brilliantly on the the stupid of the day as presented by the post itself, well, if that’s the case you and I are just at loggerheads.

I don’t abide by taking the bait. The default stance towards a troll is that he is some mixture of liar and idiot, and after the entertaining process of detecting how much of each, you go on and slap him around however appropriate until he starts repeating himself or copying and pasting the RSS from a favored windbag.

And it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so whenever I am specifically abusing the troll it’s under a nym whose every relative should be permanently off, for its comments portend nothing but sound and fury signifying the Internet.

I encourage each part of this out of all comers, but especially the latter, because I can legitimately understand not wanting to deal with some mouth-breather who’s been banned from a local gloryhole for a couple days and has to occupy himself otherwise. It’s the main reason that, unlike the intrepid goons running this blog, I don’t read their sources.

I’m not trying to convince you to join in, I’m just trying to say that there’s something to it (better bully some asshole who clearly wants it than anyone else, after all) and this is more fitting a place than most online for it. And I’m trying to make it less dribbly and unpleasant than it was in the high awful days of Troofus Prime.

Besides which, sometimes the stupid of the day is just kind of self-explanatory, you know? This guy is basically Sarah Palin minus ovaries, plus a stupid accent, and divided by a few months’ fifteen minutes. What in the hell can you say to that?

But somehow, my experience with your work is you are a little more interesting than that.
