African-American: Your Doin It Wrong

Posted at 8:18 by Gavin M.
A Three-Step Program For Conservative Media Success, In Four Steps:

Step 1: Engage Right-Wing Message Machine

Call the Boston FOX News affiliate (their headquarters is right off the Common, diagonally across the street from the Statehouse) and tell them you’re a student at Harvard Law School where you work for Alan Dershowitz, and you’re a former speechwriter for the South African, uh, not black-people party, and president of Students Against the International Muslim Conspiracy, and X and Y conservative groups, bla-bla, this-that, and hey, Barney Frank is speaking at the Kennedy School of Government, and how about you come and cover it and we’ll give him some hell about his responsibility for the financial crisis?1 And FOX is like, Barney Frank? Ding-ding-ding! Heh-heh. Okay, sure, nothing definite, but if nothing else is going on we’ll send a guy. What’s your name — Adam? Joel? Okay, whatever, great. Maybe we’ll see you there.

Step 2: Get Pwned

Step 3: Hero! Of! Conservatism!

Step 4: Engage Liberal WTF!? Machine

Heh, on Hardball, they played a heavily edited clip where the student just assails him with the accusations and then it cuts, without warning, to the part where he calls the student a “right-wing” something or other and the girl shouts all hysterically, “YOU SHOULDN’T LABEL HIM!!” Then the host of the show was all, “I agree! He should have answered the question rather than just label the guy, ‘right-wing’!” Jeezum crow… Someone should really dig up that clip too. Just to show the contrast. It wasn’t Mathews, by the way. That guy who’s always on Morning Joe was filling in as the host.

Meanwhile, from a drafty hotel penthouse somewhere in College Station, as they watch the manufactured controversy to blame Barney Frank on FoxNews, Phil and Wendy Gramm chortle from the jacuzzi tub they are sharing, passing each other little moist bits of frozen cheesecake and trying to guess from the sounds the bubbles make whose farts are whose.

this is good too. for some reason wapo published an op-ed written by little joel whining about propaganda in arabic language textbooks. but, he’s a moron:

I have been a student of Arabic at Harvard University for several years. In his July 5 op-ed, “Teaching Arabic and Propaganda,” Joel Pollak distorted the content of Georgetown University Press’s “Al-Kitaab” textbook and Harvard’s Arabic language program.

Mr. Pollak claimed that the maps in “Al-Kitaab” do not include Israel. There are three maps in the book: On Page 13, Israel is represented without the West Bank and Gaza. On Page 389, two historical maps (from the Ottoman era to World War I) predate Israel’s existence.

While I admire the idealism of students who have embarked on a hunger strike to support the demands of Harvard’s security guards, I think the protest is misguided. Basic economics dictates that the more each worker is paid, the fewer workers will be hired. Raising the wages of security guards who already have jobs could shut the door on the poor and unemployed.

Look, Barney knows he’s going down in history as the sleazebag who took money from {insert financial player here} while heading up the committee supposedly watching over the financial industry. It is slightly surprising to watch him try to brazen out a position where he just happened to be a close observer of this meltdown, with no power or control.

Barney is scum. It is puzzling to me to watch you liberals act like any criticism of taking bribes money from the people that destroyed our economy is a conservative plot. I don’t think history is going to judge Barney and Chris Dodd and Paulson and Bush kindly.

More Pollak (from a few years back):

Joel Pollak is a writer and actor based in Cape Town, South Africa.

    Theatre!

And, of course, he has a blog.

This excange with Frank is a break for him, as it appears his usual shtick is to run around challenging the current Israel/apartheid South Africa comparison whenever it raises its ugly head.

By the way, here’s how the Harvard University Gazette reported Frank’s talk. Pollak is an aside.

There is too much bad blood between Clinton and Obama to allow for a compromise to emerge. And the longer they fight, the better McCain’s chances grow. McCain, a Vietnam War hero, projects strength and confidence. He is not an economic heavyweight, but neither are his opponents. This will remain a close race, sensitive to events in Iraq and on Wall Street. But for now, McCain is the man to beat.

    Joel Pollak, March 6, 2008.

The American idea is in danger. The vision of limited government and unlimited opportunity that the United States cherished long after other nations succumbed to the false temptations of socialism is hours away from execution. It is being killed by a vain radicalism that lost the political and ideological battles of the Cold War but has returned in the guise of pragmatism and the personality cult of Barack Obama.

He’s fairly intellectually honest about his own culpability, but also addresses how he tried but failed to head off some of the trust fund problems. As far as apologia go, the “I fought really hard to douse that fire and was hideously burned, but I’m sorry your record collection got melted” is pretty good. Maybe the best, in my book.

    PENIS.

Um, am I missing something? How Mr. Harvard Law get pwned? Did Frank give him a smackdown?

Your General Hospital watching soap opera fans have this to offer:

JOEL POLLAK, HARVARD LAW STUDENT: My name is Joel Pollak, and I’m a student at the law school. In your account of how the subprime mortgage crisis came about, you mentioned the Reagan administration, the Bush administration, the Republicans in Congress, conservatives. But it happened on your watch. And I would just like to ask you…

REP. BARNEY FRANK (D-MA), FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAIN: When was my watch, sir?

POLLAK: When you became the chairman of the…

    FRANK: Which was when?

POLLAK: It was in 2007. I’m still waiting — I’m still waiting for a very simply answer to a question…

FRANK: And I’m waiting for you to tell me what you think I should have done. I didn’t say (INAUDIBLE)

    POLLAK: No, you’re a public representative. I’m a student. I’m asking you…

FRANK: Oh, which allows you to say things that you don’t back up?

    POLLAK: I’m asking…

    (LAUGHTER)

POLLAK: It does — it does allow me to ask you a question. I’m waiting for you to explain…

FRANK: OK, I’ll give you an answer.

POLLAK: … how much, if any, responsibility do you think you (INAUDIBLE)

FRANK: Well, I will take this. First of all, you are a student. Students are entitled to full constitutional freedom of speech under the 1st Amendment. You’ve made an accusation that is wholly inaccurate.

POLLAK: I didn’t accuse you of anything. I’m asking how much responsibility…

    FRANK: Sure.

POLLAK: … if any — you can say none. That’s fine.

FRANK: I think you’re being disingenuous.

I became chairman on January — and this is the right-wing attack on liberals to try and stop regulation that you are repeating. On January 31st, I became the chairman. On March 28th, the committee passed a very tough Fannie/Freddie bill, which the Bush administration liked. Later that year in November, we passed a bill to restrict subprime lending. Because we did the subprime lending restrictions, Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, did what Alan Greenspan refused to do and said, OK, I’ll do that.

So I do want to ask you, when you suggest that I should apologize for something or take responsibility, what is it you think I should have done that I didn’t do?

POLLAK: Well, after spending the entire speech blaming conservatives — I happen to think of myself as of as a conservative, and I rent and I think of myself as someone who cares about poor people — I’m just interested in whether you think you have any responsibility…

FRANK: Well, I’ve answered the question. Sir, I think you’re not being fully honest with us. You clearly are implying that I do. And I’m asking you — I have given you my record…

If the media was half as hard on Obama as they were on Bush in the press conferences, Obama would melt. Or talk about “speaking Austrian” or how he visited “fifty-seven states”, lol.

It’s no wonder the “clean and articulate” one (h/t Joe Biden) won’t release his SAT scores, LSAT scores, and academic record. Because he’s just an empty Affirmative Action suit. All he does is make guilty white liberals feel good about themselves, but at the expense of the country.

And after 20 years he still grieves

He said I lick now at every chance in honky tonks

I mean, you know you’re the people who thought idiots like Bush Jr. and Cheney and co were ‘smart’, so, you know you’re kind of in a hole with the public on judging who is and isn’t ‘smart’. You people don’t like smart people anyway — why is this a complete? You’re always insulting professors and scientists and academics and ivory tower and educated liberals. Make up your minds — either it’s good to be smart, or it’s bad, and everyone ought think with their gut and reject evolution and global warming and blame Jimmy Carter and Barney Frank for the collapse of Wall Street.

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/mar/19/barack-obama/model-t-better-mileage-SUVs/
Mostly True. Note that the “criticism” of Obama’s “mangling” of mileage numbers…

But his implication is that we haven’t gotten more fuel efficient in 100 years. And that’s a reach.

Let’s look at the differences between today’s SUVs and the Model T of 1908.

To start with, Casey said, Model Ts reached top speeds of only 40 miles an hour. They guzzled motor oil, about a quart a month. The original tops were made of canvas, and they had no heating or cooling systems. They also had none of the safety features of modern cars: no bumpers, no air bags, no seat belts, no antilock breaks.

IOW, in a century of technological advances, cars have improved in every way except mileage. This is justified because cars have improved in every way except mileage.

In 2007, a few months after I became the Chairman, the House passed a strong reform bill; we sought to get the administration’s approval to include it in the economic stimulus legislation in January of 2008; and finally got it passed and onto the President’s desk in July 2008. Or maybe Joe the Plumber and Joel the Stuart Larkin of Harvard Law School can save the country together, tag-team style. Joel really likes Joe:

Wishful thinking and self-deception are the order of the day. The only Americans who seem to have kept their wits are the ordinary men and women who pay taxes, run small businesses and dream of a better life. It was one such-”Joe the Plumber” of Ohio-who asked Obama about his tax policy, eliciting the now-infamous response: “I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

    […]

Whatever opposition remains to this vision will be very difficult to muster after Obama’s victory. The Democrats are poised to win the executive and sweep the legislature. All that stands in their way are the millions of Joes who have not lost faith in the American dream, despite the failures of the Bush presidency. They are fighting for a cause greater than McCain. If they show up to vote, all is not lost.

From that 11/2/08 piece I linked above.

But it’ll chafe my ass until the end of time that they mock community organizing as somehow silly or illegitimate. It’s not only completely ignorant, it’s ignorant of basic American history.

“Mediating institutions engage their members in the sharing of their stories, help them understand the meaning of their stories in the context of the larger world and of their own value tradition, and organize their members for action in the spirt of the Hebrew word, tikkun, to repair or heal the world.

What commie fuck said that about the peculiar American genius of organizing around, and for, communities? Alexander DeToqueville in Democracy in America. Some would say it’s a profoundly conservative value, to build up communities around common interests.

But what do they do beside link people into the democratic system? Getting them to register to vote? Fuck that. How about getting people to help look after one another (Community watches)? Losers. OK, what about ensuring that the city or state looks after the things the city and state should be looking after? What, poor people deserve police protection and park maintenance too? No way. Helping people get access to private concerns that might help them read or get a job or get off drugs? Razing buildings to limit the drug trade? Making their homes more beautiful and prideworthy to spur an entire community to do the same thing? Fighting city hall? Supporting city hall? Getting a needed bridge built? Getting a toxic waste dump out of a neighborhood? Shit, getting a bunch of people together for some kind of “tea party”.

It’s a million fucking things that pampered douchebags who work in HR wouldn’t know, understand or care about because it can help people on a real and profound level, to give them a voice. To give them leverage. To help them out. Get back to shuffling your papers and bitching about your coworkers you worthless, meaningless fucking asshole.

BTW, Paul, since I’m sure you’ve never bothered to even visit ACORN’s website to see what the organization really does, here’s a sample:

Community organizing: Each of the 1,200 local ACORN neighborhood chapters in 110 cities and 40 states brings neighbors together to work for stronger, safer and more just communities.

Issue campaigns: Each ACORN office carries out multiple issue campaigns. ACORN members across the country work to raise the minimum wage or enact living wage policies; eliminate predatory financial practices by mortgage lenders, payday lenders, and tax preparation companies; win the development of affordable housing and community benefits agreements; improve the quality of and funding for urban public schools; rebuild New Orleans; and pass a federal and state ACORN Working Families Agenda, including paid sick leave for all full time workers.

A recent study shows that our issue campaign victories have delivered approximately $15 billion in direct monetary benefits to our membership and constituency over the past 10 years.

Service delivery: ACORN and its allied organizations provide extensive services to our members and constituency. These include free tax preparation focusing on the Earned Income Tax Credit; screening for eligibility for federal and state benefit programs; and, through the ACORN Housing Corporation, first time homeowner mortgage counseling and foreclosure prevention assistance, and low income housing development.

Ballot initiatives: ACORN-backed ballot-initiative campaigns in 2006 helped raise the minimum wage in Ohio, Arizona, Missouri and Colorado, working with community-faith-labor coalitions on successful campaigns in each state.

Voter participation: Since 2004, ACORN has helped more than 1.7 million low- and moderate-income and minority citizens apply to register to vote.

I mean, I can understand why you fear that a half million people with the least political power in the country will force us all into Marxism. And then there’s the whole, “who the fuck do these people think they are? Don’t they know poor people are supposed to just accept the crumbs from the shit sandwich the middle class gets to eat, and shut the fuck up? Everyone knows that if you don’t have the budget to hire a 7-figure lobbyist who wears $600 loafers, you’re not supposed to participate in politics. That’s what it says in the Constitution” or some such bullshit.

Grow the fuck up and calm down, Mary.

And that America generally now hates them and realizes their ‘ideas’ are the exact pyramid of sh*t they always were.

Particularly given that the 40-year rise was built entirely upon conservative white Southerners moving from the Democratic to the Republican Party ever since Civil Rights, and now, that’s all tapped, all the white Southern conservatives who were going to become Republican have long migrated, so it’s all just going to get worse for them.

A pre-presidency biography full of WIN. We should have been able to predict his performance as president based on it. But we misoverestimated how he would do. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/86112/George-W-Bush
    The links are mine.

George W. Bush became the first person since Benjamin Harrison in 1888 to be elected president despite having lost the nationwide popular vote. . . . Bush was president of his fraternity and, like his father, a member of Yale’s secretive Skull and Bones society; unlike his father, he was only an average student and did not excel in athletics. . . . In the fall of 1970, he applied for admission to the University of Texas law school but was rejected. Although Bush apparently missed at least eight months of duty between May 1972 and May 1973, he was granted an early discharge so that he could start Harvard business school in the fall of 1973. . . . After receiving his M.B.A. from Harvard in 1975, Bush returned to Midland, where he began working for a Bush family friend. . . . After an unsuccessful run for Congress in 1978, Bush devoted himself to building his business. With help from his uncle . . . . Bush was able to attract numerous prominent investors. The company struggled through the early 1980s until the eventual collapse of oil prices in 1986, when it was purchased by the Harken Energy Corporation. Bush received Harken stock, a job as a consultant to the company, and a seat on the company’s board of directors. . . . After the sale of his company, Bush spent 18 months in Washington, D.C., working as an adviser and speechwriter in his father’s presidential campaign. Following the election, he moved to Dallas, where he and a former business partner organized a group of investors to purchase the Texas Rangers professional baseball team. . . . In 1994 Bush challenged Democratic incumbent Ann Richards for the governorship of Texas. A major issue in the campaign concerned Bush’s sale of all his Harken stock in June 1990, just days before the company completed a second quarter with heavy losses. . . . .Reelected in 1998 with nearly 70 percent of the vote, Bush became the first Texas governor to win consecutive four-year terms . . . . Bush formally announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in June 1999.

So he didn’t serve much of his second term as governor. Sort of like how Sarah Palin wouldn’t have served much of her first term if the voters hadn’t been pwnd by a Republican recently enough to still remember it.

Many, many repigs were elected in the prime years (the 80s) of term limit pledges, only to revoke those pledges when it came time to not run for reelection.

The only part of the Contract On America they actually cared about was the part where they got to steal a few dollars from the poorest people in the country. Not because they could actually do anything with it – just for spite.

As evinced by the razor-thin Congressional margins and harrowing election faced by the first Democratic candidate since his regime, truly Newt “The Lizard King” Gingrich has founded a political empire to stand proud for a thousand years. What’s that you say – he’s trying to run for President again? This time for sure!

Incidentally, the approval ratings for Truman were during the worst months of the grueling, WWI-style stalemate which ultimately achieved little but changing the physical layout of the Seoul suburbs, and his Republican rival Eisenhower won the war on the promise of finding out what would be possible to bring an end to the ignominious meatgrinder as quickly as possible. The shamed nuke-enthusiast MacArthur existed as an alternative, but for some reason the public didn’t decide that the problem with Truman’s dogged pursuit of an endless war for a Japanese imperial fief was that he wasn’t doing it bloodily enough yet.

And the revival in Truman’s fortunes bottomed out in the 80s. These days he is revered primarily by dead-enders who hate everything he stands for and the All in the Family theme song; he was a middling President mainly remembered for carrying out the disgusting but necessary nuclear attack on Japan and desegregating the Army. The only good thing anyone sees in his handling of Korea is firing McA before he became a liability.

The Secretary was deeply perturbed by my attitude… It wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing.” – Dwight Eisenhower, Mandate For Change, pg. 380, 1963

I wouldn’t debate the merits of the second bomb, but I don’t think Eisenhower is correct. The Japanese had been defeated, but Japan had not. Outside of the surreal trust evidently put in the idea of Stalin as a favorable neutral negotiator (something so influential it evidently lead to Japanese forces in Manchuria attempting to avoid defending themselves against the advancing Red Army at any reasonable cost), the by then fully-Navy-dominated martial aristocracy had completely abandoned the idea of an exit objective for the war and within limits would do anything to keep it going.

From the US perspective, the critical thing to avoid a monstrous blockade and invasion (the blockade alone likely to kill millions of people owing to the primary importance of shipping food to and between the Home Islands and the then-critically-low levels of stored food) was providing the imperial house (the only countervailing power that actually existed domestically) a fitting pretext to declare the war lost and surrender inevitable. We had already burned Tokyo essentially to the ground at the cost of more lives than both atomic bombs put together; there was little else we could have done.

It is sometimes put in terms of convincing the around 20% of the Japanese population that thought the war was worth continuing in any fashion that it was not, but like our dead-enders their constituents in government had no real use for them. They were just a rhetorical figure justifying a foresworn effort to stick it out to the bitter end.

It is sometimes put in terms of convincing the around 20% of the Japanese population that thought the war was worth continuing in any fashion that it was not,

The Japanese people would do anything the emperor told them to – as they did when he said to surrender after Nagasaki.

You’re underestimating the severe political interference in the imperial office. For pretty much his entire tenure Showa was a puppet of the governing elite with little more than a formal role in the affairs of the state. The Bomb was too singular to ignore, and even in the fairly quick sequence of events involved between the impact and the new-and-most-cruel speech the government went to enough effort to keep the Emperor locked down that the speech which ended the war had to be smuggled to a radio station in a laundry hamper.

Again, as of August 5 about 80% of the population had responded to polls pretty consistently with apathy to even utter defeat and the Emperor’s boosterism was visibly strained. A lesser catastrophe would simply have resulted in more severe Imperial cloistering for the duration and an abortive attempt at guerilla warfare – and even the first few weeks of Downfall would probably have starved out the lives ended by the bombs twice over. (And that’s assuming the vicious firebombing begun after Japan came into easy range of conventional bombers had ended beforehand – no reason to think it would.)

Military historians pretty much agree that the nukes were to show the USSR who was going to be the Big Kid On The Block, postwar.

I think it’s a consideration, but I just think that calling it the solitary consideration is unnecessarily glib.

Japan just happened to be unlucky enough to be part of the posturing of the New American Empire. They deserved to be beaten, but not nuked.

However pure or impure the motives, ‘nuked’ was in the short and long run less brutal. And on that matter, I can accept that the nuclear attack was wrong, but it’s something we lack the agency to apologize for. It was a standard act of a brutal war whose antagonist was tenderizing China like a cheap steak even at that late stage of events.

Alec, while I can understand and even agree with your analysis, and balance that with Repig’s statements, and their inherent validity, part of me wonders how on earth we could rationally use a weapon that we had no real experience testing (apart from the famous Trinity Test), much less using.

By the way, Repig, the Trinity Test results were given to the Soviet Union at Potsdam, which puts a dent in the “let’s whip out our biggest cock” theory.

One does not excuse the other. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this. I’ll stick with the idea that Ike probably knew a lot more about the deep intricacies of the situation than you or I do.

And you’re right, there was more than just one reason for the nuke drop. Another reason was that America wanted to find out the effects of actually using one for real on a human population.

The argument about their dogged resistance can go the other way just as easily. If Japan was as hell bent on resistance as the historians insist, one or two nukes wouldn’t make much of a difference.

part of me wonders how on earth we could rationally use a weapon that we had no real experience testing (apart from the famous Trinity Test), much less using.

Results suggested something congruous enough with a normal firestorm, which (unfortunately) we had plenty of experience with. The poor understanding of fallout was the single biggest problem there, but on the balance one can kind of forgive military engineers in 1945 for not being particularly meticulous about where dust would wind up after they were done incinerating everything.

By the way, Repig, the Trinity Test results were given to the Soviet Union at Potsdam, which puts a dent in the “let’s whip out our biggest cock” theory.

It’s not really his theory – it’s a big deal, and there’s at least some validity to it, especially in light of the timing vis-a-vis the planned Russian invasion. The date of the attack being well after both (a) it was understood approximately what the bomb would do and (b) we had the capability of doing it suggests a great deal of forethought, in addition to inadvertently putting my birthday 42 years after one of history’s worst tragedies and ruining my damn childhood.

By the way, Repig, the Trinity Test results were given to the Soviet Union at Potsdam, which puts a dent in the “let’s whip out our biggest cock” theory.

It’s not my theory, it’s the theory of many military and ordinary historians. Who knows if evidence would be believed by the Soviets? Faking of all kinds of documents, photos, data, movies, etc is very old indeed.

The argument about their dogged resistance can go the other way just as easily. If Japan was as hell bent on resistance as the historians insist, one or two nukes wouldn’t make much of a difference.

I just think that the main issue – not for you particularly but for the entire popular question of the justification of the bombings – is a Whiggish misperception of who fights a war. Especially for the kind of war we and Japan were in at that point, the critical thing was either untying or laying open the Gordian knot of the suicidal Junkers running the state – the populace was as terrified and indifferent as it could possibly be expected to be; it was necessary that either the Emperor be somehow freed to end the war or the military be convinced that nothing good could come of the fight. Beyond breaking the defense of the Home Islands by brute force (and again, in the process starving a lot of people), the only real alternative would seem to be the massive deployment of nerve gas, something we were a lot more squeamish about than burning people alive for some reason.

And in the end, I think you’re right that there’s no excusing what we did, but on the other hand there just isn’t any apologizing for it, either – at least not on our part. It was the apex of a brutal history of amoral violence stretching back half a century, and that kind of thing can only be justified, not excused.

The first half of this sentence is in perfect agreement with Ike’s assessment that the Japanese needed a way to “save face”. The second part is a mirror of the 1945-type reality on both sides War was going FORWARD and KILLING, not negotiation. It would have been awfully hard to tell Americans “we’ll just stop fighting for a while and try to negotiate with them”. You also had the agreements among the Allies that the only acceptable surrender was unconditional. Which, ironically enough, we did NOT do in Japan since we let the emperor keep his position.

I really wish I had kept a link to the polls in question. It was especially hilarious in the waning days of Bush’s presidency – it seems there’s always one in five people stupid enough to take the hawks’ word for it no matter how badly it happens to be going.

(I maintain my thesis in slight disagreement with Dolan’s – the surrender of Japan essentially required a massive, horrifying turn of events after which the Emperor could not be removed as an agent in the discussion of foreign policy; the catastrophic failure of the hawks’ narrative depended both on the loss of Stalin as an outlet for honorable defeat and the inability to leak the bad news gradually and regroup. I don’t believe that Downfall would have been as arduous and difficult as is imagined – after all, only about one in five Japanese subjects actually thought the war worth fighting under any circumstances, so there were far too few people to whip up a protracted guerilla war – but it’s still best we didn’t even have to start preparing for it. And it also meant the lack of a major diplomatic actor breaking hearts with nerve gas and the presence of a stark reminder of the absolute violence of nuclear weapons – so no normalization of chemical or nuclear warfare. The standard Pangloss story about Hiroshima is wrong, but the act itself is still defensible. Vaguely.)

I don’t abide by taking the bait. The default stance towards a troll is that he is some mixture of liar and idiot, and after the entertaining process of detecting how much of each, you go on and slap him around however appropriate until he starts repeating himself or copying and pasting the RSS from a favored windbag.

And it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so whenever I am specifically abusing the troll it’s under a nym whose every relative should be permanently off, for its comments portend nothing but sound and fury signifying the Internet.

I encourage each part of this out of all comers, but especially the latter, because I can legitimately understand not wanting to deal with some mouth-breather who’s been banned from a local gloryhole for a couple days and has to occupy himself otherwise. I think it’s a consideration, but I just think that calling it the solitary consideration is unnecessarily glib.

Really? You don’t think Harry Truman was that cynical? I do. He instantly went from a relatively conciliatory attitude to the Soviets (a policy inherited from FDR) to totally antagonistic to them, and the about-face came exactly at the moment he was told that the Death Star bomb was operational. That’s no coincidence.

Those people were incinerated to scare Stalin — already universally known as paranoid madman who could be cultivated to some degree with friendly overtures but whose absolute worst decisions were made out of fear. So not only was the decision to drop the bombs evil; it was also stupid. Ok, scare is perhaps too vague. The nukes were a gruesome geopolitical form of a Dear John letter from the U.S. to the Soviets denoting that the Allied partnership was effectively severed forthwith. The mushroom clouds put the Soviets on notice.

Naturally, Harry Truman is to this day worshipped by neocons and liberal hawks alike.

It’s possible, but this version of events has (at least from Truman’s perspective) never added up for me – particularly owing to the “military base” remarks and the expressions of solemnity and near-term contrition appropriate only if that were actually the case.

It’s very easy to portray him as a devious mastermind, but he barely understood the underlying physics by the time the attack occurred and I just don’t think he had either the canniness or savagery necessary to play the part the counterculture historiography casts him for. I don’t think he was a complete dupe or innocent, either, but he was no Custis LeMay.

This might be the case in the wider geopolitical context (I lean generally towards it with the caveat that a distinct rather than opportunistic anti-Soviet tendency didn’t emerge until the second half of the 40s and the earliest and the ‘loss’ of China and the first desectorization of Germany at the latest), but in the context of the Japanese war there were specific reasons to make some kind of dramatic and catastrophically abusive display of unprecedented ability or volition (a worse way to either level cities or carve Japanese infantrymen out of caves) which motivated the nuclear attacks. As for Truman himself, the single biggest push factor would probably have been a desire to prevent by however brutal means the war in the Pacific theatre from becoming ‘his’, especially after the defeat of the Axis in Europe.

Naturally, Harry Truman is to this day worshipped by neocons and liberal hawks alike.

Which is more than enough to disqualify him from this grisly role. After all, he was evidently capable of guilt, which I have on good authority is the main reason the Muslim bacillus is outbreeding us.

Helen Keller published her autobiography when she was 22. What a bitch.
Also, she was a socialist. I googled it.

So, an egotist and a parasite… I’ll bet she was a feminazi to boot! Good thing Affirmative Action wasn’t around in those days, so she could rob a white boy of good breeding of his rightful place in the world.

On topic, the fact that this exchange has been edited for the TV machine is hilarious. Why won’t reality stick to the goddamn narrative cooked up by AEI, Heritage, and Cato?

What you are forgetting is that Joel Pollak knows the first rule of Winning for Wingnuts: If you can keep on smirking, it doesn’t matter what they do to you factually. This is equivalent to comment trolls who win in their own minds as long as they keep replying, “Nuh-UH.”
