The many faces of Keyser Soze Horst Schakat
John Fund, August 1, 2002:
Horst Schakat, a former political prisoner in East Germany[.]
John Fund, September 19, 2005:
Horst Schakat, a German who created a series of successful businesses in California for 30 years but retired to his native land in 2001.
One doesn’t exclude the other of course — but when the only Google hit is Fund’s 2002 column, we get a bit suspicious.

The greatest trick Horst Schakat ever pulled was convincing Sadly, No! that he doesn’t exist…
Think about it…

Seems like a bunch of Horst Schakat to me. Honestly Herr Schakat could easily have been a political prisoner any time between 1945 and 1971, then come here and create a business only to return to the Fatherland in 2001. Fund probably knows him from the Sactown Rotory Club or something.

I found one other: HorstSchakat @ poplawscy.de, possibly to be found at 5 Geneststr., Berlin 12622. It was a google-cached sql statement.

There also appears to be a Horst G?nther Schakat, author of the celebrated “Die wirtschaftspolitischen Instrumente zur F?rderung der
Wettbewerbsf?higkeit der Westberliner Wirtschaft 1948 bis 1961,” perfect for a little light summer reading on the beach.

horst (h?rst) pronunciation
n.
A mass of the earth’s crust that lies between two faults and is higher than the surrounding land.
[German, from Middle High German hurst, thicket, from Old High German.]

Additionally, the California Secretary of State doesn’t list any executive officers of businesses under Horst Schakat.

Nothing also comes up under the regular California business search for “Schakat.” There are hits for “Horst,” including some businesses currently suspended that started back in the 60s.

My question is whether or not he ever ran into problems with Mr. Kot Tair.
