At this point, no news is good news. The Syria situation is worrying, but from a media point of view.. The attack was carried out at the least media friendly time of week, and it was 9 hours ago, and still nothing much. It suggests this was meant to be done on the quiet.

It does lend weight to the “because we can” theory. The military must know that the media are a bigger potential threat than Syria, and so have a motivation for staying quiet if they don’t want this to go any further.

It’s all set up for Bibi anyway.

Those poor fuckers are having a MUCH more difficult time getting rid of their Likudnik Neocon madmen than we are.

I think we (or “some of us”) would JOKE about it, but that’s not the same thing.

First of all, as incompetent as these assclowns are, they have shown quite a knack for starting wars. This is too small, too indirect and too subtle. And subtle they ain’t.

And you do not have only two choices. It didn’t have to be “starting a war” or “accidental”. Everybody in the area knows al – Asad does NOT want war with the US, or with Israel. They could very well have hit a border villiage on purpose, knowing full well that there would be no retaliation from the Syrians.

I promise you – if and when the bush/cheney administration starts a shooting war as an october surprise, it will be neither small nor subtle, nor will there be any doubts about the event.

Although a slim majority of people favour Obama on defence, that group may not contain all Obama supporters. Obamas steady rise in the polls has been mostly linked to the crashing economy, and many voters could simply have put foreign policy concerns aside, with the economy being so much more important right now.

They are indeed pushing the same old buttons, but they are still the most reliable buttons the republicans have.

Part of me wonders that if this isn’t a top down attempt at an October surprise by the bush administration, if it is a ratfucking attempt which originates somewhere lower down the chain of command. After all, the Military has more than its share of right wingers, racists, and nutjobs. This would account for the silence so far. Call me paranoid, but in this election season…

If it were part of political strategy, you would expect it to be on fox news even before the helicopters take off.

With any luck, the whole thing will be anti-climatic and not make too many headlines. The conventional wisdom is that Mcain is more trusted on defence, but some polls have been showing otherwise. Hard to say what effect tension about the middle east is going to cause at this point.
