If Palin went home to visit her sick grandmother, would we be speculating about her plans to shoot the old woman from an airplane?

(just because it's been almost a day without someone saying this...)

It would be irresponsible not to speculate.

Even if a proper war isn’t on the cards, it could be intended as the start to building a media narrative that presents Syria as the next scary enemy that only Mcain can save us from.

They'd better work quickly then. The October Surprise sweepstakes offer expires on Friday, and Election Day is 9 days away.

if and when the bush/cheney administration starts a shooting war as an october surprise, it will be neither small nor subtle, nor will there be any doubts about the event.

Agreed. And Fox would know about it far enough in advance to have their sexy "America At TEH WAR!" graphics all ready to go.

It could just be a little reminder to the Israelis that Syria can be pushed around a bit, and that negotiation is for wimps. The neo-con Israelis use the same methods as the American neocons, but have better luck with the same tactics because of the closer proximity of the scary scary brown people.

At this point, no news is good news. The Syria situation is worrying, but from a media point of view.. The attack was carried out at the least media friendly time of week, and it was 9 hours ago, and still nothing much. It suggests this was meant to be done on the quiet.

It does lend weight to the "because we can" theory. The military must know that the media are a bigger potential threat than Syria, and so have a motivation for staying quiet if they don't want this to go any further.

Hell. I’ve just realised.. It could have more to do with the Israeli elections than the US elections!

It's all set up for Bibi anyway.

Those poor fuckers are having a MUCH more difficult time getting rid of their Likudnik Neocon madmen than we are.

He's gonna be one of President Obama's ongoing challenges...

This could be a warm-up exercise, something related to starting the drumbeat. After all, the Bush/Cheney way is to begin with the PR and misinformation, then send the tanks in.

Even if a proper war isn't on the cards, it could be intended as the start to building a media narrative that presents Syria as the next scary enemy that only Mcain can save us from.

Sorry. They might, but it's pretty obvious that this AIN'T it.

First of all, as incompetent as these assclowns are, they have shown quite a knack for starting wars. This is too small, too indirect and too subtle. And subtle they ain't.

And you do not have only two choices. It didn't have to be "starting a war" or "accidental". Everybody in the area knows al - Asad does NOT want war with the US, or with Israel. They could very well have hit a border villiage on purpose, knowing full well that there would be no retaliation from the Syrians.

I promise you - if and when the bush/cheney administration starts a shooting war as an october surprise, it will be neither small nor subtle, nor will there be any doubts about the event.

John McCain, after a lifetime of nonpareil fellatio and a week of light coverage
I saw Nonpareil Fellatio in 1988 when they played at the Fiddlers' Arms, as warm-up for The Bang-Bang.

And Mark Levin still writes in the exact style of the Automatic Letter-of-Complaint Generator.

I just don't believe that at this moment, one week before the election with the republican losing badly and Bush's credibility being somewhat worse than the phrase "in the toilet" can convey, that starting a new war will help their cause. doesn't mean they won't try it though.

I wish I could be so optimistic.

Although a slim majority of people favour Obama on defence, that group may not contain all Obama supporters. Obamas steady rise in the polls has been mostly linked to the crashing economy, and many voters could simply have put foreign policy concerns aside, with the economy being so much more important right now.

They are indeed pushing the same old buttons, but they are still the most reliable buttons the republicans have.

Part of me wonders that if this isn't a top down attempt at an October surprise by the bush administration, if it is a ratfucking attempt which originates somewhere lower down the chain of command. After all, the Military has more than its share of right wingers, racists, and nutjobs. This would account for the silence so far. Call me paranoid, but in this election season...

No official announcements yet.. If the US administration doesn't own up to the actions soon, I will be suspecting it could have been an accident. In these days of GPS navigation, it is hard to end up just on the wrong side of a border, but it is still possible.

If it were part of political strategy, you would expect it to be on fox news even before the helicopters take off.

With any luck, the whole thing will be anti-climatic and not make too many headlines. The conventional wisdom is that Mcain is more trusted on defence, but some polls have been showing otherwise. Hard to say what effect tension about the middle east is going to cause at this point.
