Yeah, there was Watergate. And bombing Laos. Invading Cambodia. And dirty tricks. Spying. Arming a genocidal dictator in Pakistan. Putting Rehnquist on the court. Egregiously signing the "double nickel" into law. And lots more. But Nixon's real perfidy, as every aware person knows, was his shameless pandering for southern vote in 1969 when he denied Penn State their rightful National Championship.

Sarantakes dug up a great nugget from Paterno's speech at the 1973 Penn State commencement. "I'd like to know," Paterno asked the graduates, "how could the president know so little about Watergate in 1973 and so much about college football in 1969?"

I’m reading “Nixonland” right now. There’s a lot of similarities with today’s politics: the blatant racism (still alive in some quarters, and refocused into homophobia in others), the rise of spite politics, the unsubtle message that vaguely defined “elites” are looking down on Real Amurricans.

I’d love to participate in discussin ghte book. After Boston, y’all can swing by San Francisco, right?
