I have strong, happy childhood memories of going to the polls with my mom and grandparents and newer memories of taking my son with me when I voted, and I really don’t like to vote early. I imagine I’ll wait and go to the polls on election day. I’m such a sentimentalist.

#2 is not part of the broader audience’s awareness.

I heard an interesting thing on Air America this morning. Apparently, Palin’s debating strong suit is the short-answer, no follow-up format. She can spout her non-answer generalities in response to a request for specifics without fear of a Couric-style shark attack (heh) asking for, you know, specifics. Tonight’s debate format favors her.

So we’re up to three reasons Palin will win tonight: (1) Low expectations. (2) Gwen Ifill is biased against her. (3) The format fits her folksy, meandering, no-answer style.

I’ll have to watch it on TiVo and read the reviews, because I’m attending a Scotch-drinking event tonight. But I am not sanguine about hte* outcome here.

I think that, for the large majority of the cases, the dedication to wingnuttiness is not deep enough to motivate any real-world violence, but who knows? Vigilance is about all we can rely on, if there’s no way of getting some poll watchers.

I certainly plan to vote early, though I don’t expect any trouble here. I might, if the Democrats had a ghost of a chance in Utah and made the wingnuts feel threatened, but even then I doubt much would stir up – the righties are pretty complacent here. This place is so red the air gets a bit pinkish.

Even so, I suspect that this fucknozzle doesn’t have, as he might put it, a prayer at winning the Utah governorship. He’s running as an uber-Christian Libertarian, and has publicly made quite a fool of himself in recent years. Dishonest businessman (teh Crazy Eddie of Computers, sorta), gun nut, godbag – the Sadlynauts might have a bit of fun with him.

I originally thought this would be a good thing, a national catharsis where the evil fucks would expose themselves for what they are and decent people everywhere would unite in horror. And I do think that is happening to a heartening degree. Kathleen Parker seems to be getting quite the shock in this regard, for example, and if she can put two and two together and be honest about the total, maybe other non-insane Republicans can too.

But I’m now starting to think that there are way more of the really batshit fuckers than I thought, and that they are the ones who will coalesce and begin to make a case that batshit craziness and racist thuggery are the new norm. I know that the internet allows people to say things they’d never say in a public forum in the meatworld and it’s easy to overestimate the problem, but . . . If even one in a hundred is really potentially dangerous, it’s not a good thing. At all.

I really hope my first thesis is correct. Otherwise, things may get terribly bad. It may be a good idea to vote early or by absentee ballot. I’m worrying about polling place intimidation in some areas. The wingnuts are getting scarier than bathtub meth users after a six-day run, when you can actually smell violence oozing from the pores like the world’s worst cologne.
